Choosing footwear for children.
Buying the correct footwear is very important for toddlers and children as the foot is a complicated part of the body. From babyhood the foot is soft and pliable and if the wrong footwear is worn for prolonged periods of time it may cause damage and lead to problems later in life.
Toe Walking
Toe walking is a pattern of walking in which a child walks on the balls of his or her feet, with no contact between the heels and ground. Toe walking is common in children who are learning to walk. After the age of 2, however, most children outgrow toe walking and begin to walk with a normal heel-to-toe pattern.
Intoning Gait
Some childrens feet turn in when they walk. It’s called intoeing or ‘pigeon toe’ and is common in young children. It’s one of the most common normal variants in children and is usually seen in both feet but may just be one.
Talipes equinovarus (Club foot)
Talipes equinovarus, is a birth defect that affects the foot and ankle. It’s a congenital condition, which means that a baby is born with it. The foot or feet turn inward. When you look at the foot, the bottom of the foot often faces sideways or even up.
Plagiochephaly
Positional plagiocephaly is flattening or molding of an infant’s skull due to prolonged contact with external surfaces. It often becomes apparent when an infant is two or three months old.
